Identity Crisis: Israel and Its Arab Citizens

Israel’s Palestinian Arab citizens constitute almost 20% of the country???s population, yet are largely cut off from the geographical, cultural, economic, and political mainstream. October 2000 was an alarm bell signaling the failure of integration of Israel’s Arab minority to date. The issue of integration is not easily resolved because it goes to the heart of Israel’s self-definition as both a Jewish and a democratic state, and because of the multi-layered nature of inter-communal relations.
