About half of the population of Northern Israel are from Arab society, where 40% of localities are Arab and Druze. Since October, the region has faced rocket and drone attacks, along with evacuation of frontline communities. The current escalation has further intensified the fears and concerns across communities in the North. Most Arab homes lack shelters and Arab local authorities, currently preparing to support their communities, have inadequate emergency response capacities and resources.
On October 1, 2024 we heard about the escalation in the North from the perspectives of Arab society and the efforts to identify and respond to their unique needs on the ground.
We were joined by:
Ameer Bisharat, CEO, the National Committee for Heads of Arab Local Authorities in Israel
Yael Israel-Cohen, Director of Planning and Strategy, Israel Office, UJA-Federation of New York
Mayssa Elaimy, Manager, 4Future Gap Year Program at Northern Goals (Yeadim L’Tsafon)
During the meeting, Ameer Bisharat also shared insights into the needs of Arab localities and goals of the new National Emergency Center for Arab Society during the war.
