Employment, Income and Poverty

The author presents data that demonstrate that low income is the main component of poverty among Arabs in Israel. Low income levels are a result of low wage levels, a high proportion of families with a single earner, and high unemployment rates. The author examined the following factors: women???s participation in the workforce, professional workers, employment for individuals holding graduate degrees, unemployment in the Arab and Jewish sectors, unemployment benefit recipients, household income, and the impact of transfer payments and taxes on the incidence of poverty.
