Abraham Initiatives Coexistence Award Honoring Champions of Shared Society

On December 29th in Tel Aviv, the Abraham Initiatives hosted the annual Champions of Shared Society ceremony, celebrating individuals and organizations advancing equality and coexistence between Arabs and Jews in Israel. This year’s recipients embody the hope and vision of a shared society, offering an inspiring alternative to the divisiveness and tensions in war-time Israel.

The 2024 recipients of the award are:

  • The Reform Movement, represented by Chair Yair Loosteen, received the award for its vision for an inclusive future. He reflected, “Since October 7th, it has been clear that it’s not enough to fight against racism and racists; we must offer Israeli society an alternative vision—a vision for ‘the day after.’”
  • Adv. Hanan Elsana, Co-CEO of “Itach-Ma’aki” Women Lawyers for Social Justice, was celebrated for her work advancing Bedouin women’s rights. In her acceptance speech, she shared, “During this time of profound pain—with 100 hostages still in Gaza, tens of thousands displaced, and unimaginable destruction—I believe more than ever that only through shared life can we move toward healing and unity. I hold onto hope for justice, equality, and security for all residents of this land. I hope that everyone living in this country understands that this is their fight too—to live in a society where equality and dignity are its foundation.”
  • Emir Muhammad Sharif Odeh, Head of the Ahmadiyya Community, acknowledged for his leadership in promoting interfaith harmony and dialogue.
  • Moaz Inon, Entrepreneur and Peace Activist

Dr. Nava Sonnenschein, one of the founders of the Wahat as-Salam – Neve Shalom village and the School of Peace, received special recognition for her lifelong contributions. Dr. Sonnenschein reflected on her recognition, noting that while the current challenges are daunting, the principles of shared society are more vital.

This year’s awards were given in a particularly challenging context of the ongoing war, as the vision of shared society seems distant. The winners stand as a testament to the potential of coexistence and as a blueprint for a better future.
