Conference Call with ACRI: The Bill on the Arrangement of Bedouin Settlement in the Negev

Jul 15, 2013 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Jul 15 2013 12:00pm - 1:00pm - Conference Call on The Bill on the Arrangement of Bedouin Settlement in the Negev with the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) The Bill on the Arrangement of Bedouin Settlement in the Negev (commonly referred to as the 'Prawer-Begin Plan') passed a first reading by the Knesset plenary by a 43-40 vote on June 24. The plan, which aims to settle land disputes between the Israeli government and Bedouins living in the Negev, has elicited crticism for planned population relocations and human rights violations on the one hand, as well as crticism for being too generous and setting bad precedent around land claims on the other. Executive director Hagai El-Ad and attorney Rawia Aburabia spoke about why ACRI is opposed to the plan and asserts that in its current form it violates Bedouin rights and would create further friction between the Bedouin community and the state while failing to resolve the current land and development problems.
