Arab Innovation in the Start-Up Nation I March 27th
Mar 27, 2015 8:30amIntegrating Arab citizens into Israel’s thriving hi-tech industry has become a major national priority. Currently, fewer than 2% of hi tech professionals in Israel are Arab citizens, while thousands of Arab engineers are not employed in their field of study.
Arab textile executive Imad Telhami wanted to see the private sector take a lead in bringing high-tech growth industries to Arab society. In 2008, he launched Babcom Centers, a highly successful call and software development center in the North. In 2014, Telhami partnered with Erel Margalit (Jerusalem Venture Partners) and Chemi Peres (Pitango Capital) to foster Arab hi-tech entrepreneurship in Israel. Together they launching a $20 Million Jewish-Arab start-up accelerator, Tawkin Labs, as part of their vision greater Jewish-Arab cooperation and a thriving tech sector within Israel’s Arab society.
