Friends of Israel Sci-Tech Schools: Beer Hayil

The Israel Sci-Tech Schools Network is committed to serving the Bedouin population in Israel. We work to provide educational opportunities and vocational training to Bedouin youth who remain on the economic and cultural periphery of Israel society. At Beer Hayil, the only Bedouin high school south of Beersheva, our Network offers 112 ninth and tenth graders the training they need to gain employment in local factories and industries. We anticipate that enrollment will grow by 20% each year. When the school is fully populated, we project that the student population will reach 1,000 students in grades nine through twelve.

One of our newest programs is an automotive studies program. This program is an optimal vocational training program because the entire Negev region depends on motor transport. The rising standards of living overall have raised the levels of car ownership and the consequent demand for repair services. Additionally, the Israeli Defense Forces is poised to shift many of its major training bases from the center of the country to the Negev over the coming decade – a development which will bring to the region increased residency and demand for services – including auto repair and maintenance. By providing the youngsters with this program, they are able to graduate from high school with a career that will benefit themselves, their family and Israeli society.
