Desert Embroidery

Desert Embroidery aims to provide a unique combination of art, culture and employment by creating an industry based on traditional skills while restoring the woman's contribution to the family's earning power.

Embroidery is a handcraft familiar to most Bedouin women from childhood, and therefore is an activity they can engage in without undermining the cultural and social norms prevalent in their society.  Desert Embroidery currently employs approximately 70 women on a regular basis. They gather once a week at a communal center where they receive payment for projects completed and materials for new projects. Most of the work is done at their homes so it can easily fit in with the women's daily routine without infringing on traditional Bedouin life style and family values.
