- Israel's War of Independence in 1948 created a unique situation for the Arab minority in the
Jewish state.
- More than 100,000 Palestinian Arabs chose to remain in their homes and subsequently
became Israeli citizens. However, they remained nationally, culturally and religiously tied to
the outside Arab world.
- It left the Arabs in Israel torn between four circles of ethno-religious and national identities:
Israeli, Palestinian, Arab, and religious (Muslim, Christian or Druze).
