National Identity Fact Sheet

  • Israel's War of Independence in 1948 created a unique situation for the Arab minority in the

Jewish state.

  • More than 100,000 Palestinian Arabs chose to remain in their homes and subsequently

became Israeli citizens. However, they remained nationally, culturally and religiously tied to

the outside Arab world.

  • It left the Arabs in Israel torn between four circles of ethno-religious and national identities:

Israeli, Palestinian, Arab, and religious (Muslim, Christian or Druze).
