Maayan Babustan

Planting together: Ein Bustan children and their families plant trees together on Tu Bishvat, Jewish New Year of the Trees.

The tree planting took place in "Bustan Nof Meshutaf", a multi-cultural center for traditional agriculture, and was established by Amiram Goldin in memory of his son Omri Goldin, who was killed in a terrorist attack. The two "Bustans" - (Ein Bustan and Bustan Nof Meshutaf) decided to cooperate in light of their shared values of coexistence and building the foundations of a peaceful, non violent future.

Maayan Babustan believes in the necessity of bi-lingual and multicultural education that fosters shared culture and language, and sees this education as a bridge between the Arab and Jewish populations and as a pre-requisite for true friendship, trust, and peace.

Maayan Babustan, ("Ein Bustan", literally "Spring in the Garden") is an Arab-Jewish non-profit organization founded in 2005 by parents in the lower Galilee, and is situated in the Arab village Bosmat Tivon. Currently, Maayan Babustan runs a bi lingual preschool and kindergarten, for Arab and Jewish  children. The children are from the Arab towns and villages Bosmat Tivon, Hilf, Zubidat, Ibtin and Zarzir, and from the Jewish town of Kiryat Tivon and its surroundings.

Maayan Babustan's unique bi-lingual programs are based on the educational concepts of Waldorf education, and on values of pluralism, tolerance, compassion and peace. It is the first and (so far) only multi-lingual and multi-cultural Waldorf kindergarten in Israel.

Emphasis is laid on humanistic and universal values. The activities in the kindergarten are based on the arts and traditional crafts, and are attuned to nature's seasons and to the holidays and customs of both cultures. The children participate in activities such as cooking and baking, music and movement, singing in two languages, story time and drama, nature walks, gardening, and more.

Plans are underway to establish a continuing framework, a bilingual elementary school due to open in 2011-2012.  Aside from the educational programs, which are the primary project, Maayan Babustan initiates and encourages activities that promote dialogue and understanding between the surrounding Jewish and Arab communities, such as multi-cultural musical events, Arabic language lessons for adults, workshops, parent education lectures in Hebrew and Arabic, and more.

Amir Shlomian, musician and Director of Maayan Babustan, which runs the Ein Bustan joint Arab-Jewish Waldorf kindergarten, leads the children in song. Music fulfills an important function in bringing Arabic speaking and Hebrew speaking children together. Working with two languages necessitates creativity and a unique curriculum that takes both languages into consideration. Maayan Babustan is currently working on production of a CD of original children’s songs in Arabic and in Hebrew. All proceeds from the CD will go to support our activities for peace.Purim in the Ein Bustan joint Arab Jewish kindergarten - all the children enjoy a chance to dress up and have fun.

Maayan Babustan Display at the Sahnin-Oranim Conference for Education for Tolerance and Joint Living: display shows typical handicrafts made by the teacher and children of Ein Bustan. Ein Bustan was chosen as one of the top 10 peace projects out of over 70 projects, and our booth attracted the attention and curiousity of hundreds of participants, both Jewish and Arab.

Spiral of Light: As a part of Ein Bustan's Hannuka celebration, a child from Ein Bustan lights a candle in a spiral of light. Lighting candles during the darkest season of the year is a symbol of our common quest for light and our belief in a better future.
