This summer, Israel itself has seen extraordinary mass demonstrations protesting the widening gap between rich and poor as part of a growing grassroots call for social justice that is taking hold in the Arab sector as well. And this September, Israel faces the prospect of a likely United Nations debate and vote on Palestinian statehood.  Against this backdrop, Israel has also seen a growth of anti-Arab legislation and public opinion that challenge the civil liberties of 1.5 million Arab citizens and pose a threat to Israel's democratic values and protections.
