AFTER THE CUP: SONS OF SAKHNIN UNITED

In 2004, one soccer team couldn't create a new Middle East, but it did show the world what one could look like. The Bnei Sakhnin team was the king of Israeli soccer in 2004 as the first team from an Arab town to win the country's State Cup and represent Israel in European competition. Owned by an Arab and coached by a Jew with Arab, Jewish and foreign-born players, the team became a symbol of coexistence and a potential bridge between Israel and its 1.4 million Arab citizens. But that winning season might be their first and last as the weight of impossible expectations from their sudden success threatens to crush the team, not to mention the hope and goodwill inspired by its historic victory.
