12/14 Call: Equal Opportunities through Education at the Technion with Philanthropist Patsy Landa and Professor Daoud Bshouty

Dec 14 2011 12:00pm - 12:40pm -

Please join our next educational conference call briefing with Patsy Landa, the Landa Fund for Equal Opportunities through Education, and Professor Daoud Bshouty, Department of Mathematics, Technion, and Academic Head of the Landa Project at the Technion. The call will take place on Wednesday, December 14th at 12:00 - 12:40 pm Eastern Standard Time.

Mrs. Landa and Professor Bshouty will discuss the Landa Fund for Equal Opportunities through Education Project for Arab Students at the Technion and the critical importance of integrating Israel's Arab citizens into the sciences. This inspiring project offers supervised academic and social support to first year Arab students studying in spheres of engineering and sciences at the Technion. For many of these bright students this is often their first in-depth encounter with Israeli Jewish society. The investment in these students is pivotal towards their successful acclimatization to this new cultural and highly competitive scholastic environment, and later, to their integration into the Israeli work place.

Mrs. Patsy Landa
The Landa Fund for Equal Opportunities through Education

Patsy Landa was born in Canada and immigrated to Israel in 1970. The Landa Fund was established in 2002 by Patsy and her husband Benny, with two interconnected aims in mind. The first is to narrow the ever widening social and economic gaps in Israel by enabling those students with "privileged minds and underprivileged means" to acquire higher education. The Landa Fund set up programs for Equal Opportunity through Education at all of Israel's universities and the Weitzman Institute providing thousands of scholarships in addition to comprehensive support programs for first year students. The second is to promote civic equality between Israel's Jewish and Palestinian citizens, an existential challenge for Israeli society, by partnering with other Israeli NGO's including Sikkuy, Merchavim, Kav Mashve and others whose activities focus on this issue.

Professor Daoud Bshouty
Department of Mathematics, Technion, and Academic Head of the Landa Project at the Technion

At age sixteen Professor Bshouty started his undergraduate studies in Mathematics at the Technion, completing his D. Sc. in 1975. Between 1976-1978 he did postdoctoral studies at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. In 1978 he joined the Technion as an assistant professor, where he works today. Throughout these years he has been serving the students at the Technion and in particular the Arab ones. Recently Professor Bshouty was nominated as Dean of Undergraduate Studies at the Technion, starting January 1st, 2012.
