BUSTAN is an Israeli NGO engaged in empowering the Bedouin minority while preserving its culture and promoting a sustainable way of life that can serve as a model for all Israelis. Our work is focused on developing a model for community empowerment projects based on principles of sustainable development and permaculture. Bustan believes that despite the ongoing conflict between the Bedouin society and the state of Israel a bridge can be built that will integrate the Bedouin minority in Israeli society. A basic movement of community empowerment must be created in which the ability of the community to perform in the reality of the modern state will be strengthened, and on the other hand the connection between the community and its cultural heritage will be renewed, in a manner that will assure availability of its cultural assets in the modern reality.
Qasr A-Sir's Ecokhan
The Qasr A Sir's Eco Khan is an initiative to renovate a small area in the center of the village that will serve as a multi-functional facility for eco-tourism, gathering arena, workshops, Permaculture and language school, empowering the community financially and inspiring ownership of the public places and livelihood. Bustan's Women Empowerment project is a first of its kind project, taking place amongst the Bedouin Women of Qasr A-Sir. The goal of the project is twofold: Firstly, to elevate the economic power of the women of the village, by means of business initiatives and confidence building, and secondly, to provide educational opportunties on matters of health and environment, such as sustainable living and nutrition.
Negev Unplugged Tours
For over a decade now, Bustan has been holding tours throughout the Negev region that are alternative to the mainstream "touristic" tours, which mostly portray the Bedouins in a romanticized way. Bustan offers a chance to glimpse into the real life of the Israeli Bedouins - their history, their social status in Israel, the problems and hardships they face from the state, and the conflicts their identity is undergoing in modern times. The PermaNegev course is an intensive permaculture and sustainability program including intensive Arabic lessons, Middle Eastern studies, field trips in the Negev and much more. The course is held at the EcoKhan of the Bedouin village of Qasr A Sir where the participants engage in the everyday life of the community through implementation of various permaculture projects and through practicing spoken Arabic. The program is a unique collaboration of Bustan, academics, and the members of Qasr A Sir.
The program is a combination of theoretical studies in class as well as hands on training in the EcoKhan, the community and other projects of Bustan. The course includes a Permaculture Design certificate (72hr) and covers more advanced subjects in Permaculture. Field trips to the Bedouin communities and in Israel are integrated in the program.
